Among the members of the athletics squad were 400m hurdler Jana Pittman, sprinter Patrick Johnson and 1998 Commonwealth Games silver medal-winning heptathlete, Jane Jamieson.

An excited Jana Pittman told reporters at Manchester Airport: "We've heard great raps about the new stadium," she said. "The English always put on a great competition and it's great competing in that atmosphere."

Australia is expected to do well at the Games and take home its fair share of the medals. Pittman backed this up by saying: "I think we've got a really good chance,"

"We're a young team and I think we're definitely going to bring home some medals."
