Papua New Guinea athletes head to Manchester

17 July 2002

The first group of Papua New Guinea athletes have set off for the Games.

They are the athletics team of Peter Pulu, Jeffrey Bai, Mowen Boino, coaches Naomi Polum and Samu Sasama, and the women's bowling double of Piwen Pomaleu and Linda Ahmat.

The bowlers are taking the place of the shooting team, which had to withdraw. Female shooter, Mel Donald, sustained an arm injury which had forced her out of the team. She was one of few athletes who had automatically qualified for the Games by shooting the percentage points in an Olympic and Commonwealth Games qualifying pistol event earlier this year.

They will be joined soon by team mate and 800m champion Clement Abai who is taking part in another event in Helsinki.

Papua New Guinea are bringing 27 athletes to the northern hemisphere and they will be competing in swimming, athletics, lawn bowls, boxing, squash, judo and weightlifting.
