Kirsty to hand over Baton to The Queen

Emotions will run high when Kirsty Howard takes a starring role alongside the Queen at tomorrow's Commonwealth Games Opening Ceremony.

Kirsty will hand the Baton to the Queen at the Opening Ceremony on 25 July

The seriously ill six-year-old, who was born with her heart back to front and needs an oxygen tank to breathe, is today being kitted out in Games uniform ready to make the final handover of the Jubilee Baton to the Queen, while millions watch on TV.

Kirsty will be the last of thousands throughout the Commonwealth to have taken part in the Baton Relay when she carries it in the stadium for the all important final leg, back into the hands of the Queen.

Kirsty, who counts David and Victoria Beckham among her close friends, is no stranger to international sporting events. She walked hand-in-hand with skipper Becks when she led the England team out at Old Trafford last October before the crucial World Cup qualifier against Greece.

Suzi Mathis, who runs the Kirsty Appeal to secure funding for Francis House Children's Hospice in Didsbury, said: "It's something we are very proud of and something we are really looking forward to. I broke the news to her and she was so excited. It was lovely.

"The Commonwealth Games is all about determination and inner strength and so I think Kirsty is the perfect person to be doing this."

The Guardian Media Group, owners of the Manchester Evening News, has arranged for nine other youngsters from Francis House to attend the Opening Ceremony.

Donations for the Kirsty appeal - which has raised just under 1.5million towards its 5million target - can be made on freephone 08000 971197.
