Nine million UK viewers watch spectacular Opening Ceremony


Nearly nine million UK viewers watched the sensational Opening Ceremony of the XVII Commonwealth Games on television last night.

The Opening Ceremony was a storming success

The Ceremony achieved a peak of 8.9m viewers - a 46.7 per cent share of the whole national TV audience - twice as much as the peak for the Sydney Olympic Games last September.

Overall, the two and a half hour programme was watched by an average audience of 8.3m, an average share of 39 per cent of the viewing audience.

Manchester was finally showing the country and world what its inhabitants have known all along that this is an amazing city and the XVII Commonwealth Games could not have a more deserving home.
