Spirit of the Games to live on!

31 July 2002

On your marks, get set for an exclusive exhibition featuring highlights from the Opening Ceremony of the Commonwealth Games.

Spirit of the Games

Catch a bit of living history at Spirit of the Games

'Spirit of the Games' is about ordinary people, doing extraordinary things, to create a Manchester spectacular.

Now everyone can be part of the action. Spirit of the Games opens on 12 August until 24 November at The Museum of Science and Industry in Manchester.

A running track will lead visitors into the Museum’s own mini stadium where the themes and the theatre of the Opening Ceremony will be displayed. A chance to see the extraordinary costumes and the Queens Golden Jubilee Baton, footage of volunteers in action and the Baton Relay, as well as all the colour, music and fantasy of the Opening Ceremony.

Feather dusters, rubber gloves and newspapers are some of the ordinary items that have been transformed into flamboyant costumes. Check out the street scene and make sounds of the city with super cool junk instruments. Take a journey across five continents and see the fantastic detail of costumes representing Malaysia, England, Australia, Ghana and Canada.

Dr Patrick Greene, museum director, said: “The Museum of Science and Industry houses collections representing some of Manchester’s greatest achievements. It is fitting that we have the opportunity to display the costumes and highlights from the Opening Ceremony of the Commonwealth Games, the latest of Manchester’s great achievements.”

For more information check out the Museum of Science and Industry’s website or phone the Museum on 0161 832 2244.
