Q. What are the plans for keeping Manchester tidy during the Games?
A. Manchester Bright and Clean is a campaign that was launched in 1998 and which is already changing the face of Manchester, not just in the city centre, but also throughout the city as a whole. By 2002, the campaign will be well established and the differences seen already in small pockets in the city in terms of extra bins, flowers, new signs etc, will be extended across all neighbourhoods.
During the Games themselves, Operational Services will be conducting extra collections within the city centre and at venues.
At M2002 Venues a large cleaning workforce will work tirelessly to ensure that spectators to these sites have clean and tidy venues to enjoy the Commonwealth Games in. In addition, M2002 will have a Waste Management plan in place to ensure that the Reduce, Reuse and Recycle goals are fulfilled.
Q. What are the plans for policing the City and the Games Village?
A. We are working closely with the relevant agencies, including the Greater Manchester Police Force. Security will be provided by the police, contracted security and specially selected trained volunteers. The arrangements and liaison with the Greater Manchester Police is such that it will not detract from the ability to respond to incidents in the public domain. The security strategy is aimed at minimizing any inconvenience to the social or economic quality of life of the communities in the vicinity of venues.
