First test for the Commonwealth team.
This weekend was the first test for the commonwealth team. The team was competing against Olympic and world champions Romania. They brought their junior European team plus Sabina Cojocar who is the junior European champion from 2000. The competition was held at the city of Liverpool gym club and took place over two days. The first day of competition was the team competition and individual all around. The second day was the apparatus finals.
In the team competition Romania were the favourites to take the title and that they did but only one and a half marks ahead of the Great Britain/Team England. This is a great improvement as they usually beat us by 9 marks.
The competition format was six in a team one of which was a reserve, which was Ashtone Johnstone. Four were then nominated out of the remaining five to compete on each piece with three out of the four scores to count. This is the same format as the Commonwealth Games.
Unfortunately during the warm up we lost Rebecca Owen through injury, hopefully she will be better for the British Championships next weekend. This meant that Ashtone was still the reserve but we just used the remaining 4 to compete all around.
In the individual all around I won with my personal best of 36.725. I also qualified for all four apparatus finals on the Sunday along with Nicola Willis and Katy Lennon. Nicola Willis placed fourth overall also achieving her personal best and Katy in 5th.
In the apparatus finals the format of the competition changes slightly, as six people can qualify for each final, three from each country in this particular competition.
On the vault final I tried a new second vault and placed joint third with Katy Lennon, Nicola Willis took the silver. On the bars final I won the gold with Nicola Willis placing third. Romania swept the board on beam and took first and second on floor. I just clenched third place.
This was a very successful result for our team, and we now have the British Championships to work to next weekend. After that the team will be training together until we leave for the Games.
Seeya next week.
