| Government: Jersey is a dependency of the Crown and owes allegiance to the sovereign, but it is not incorporated into the UK. Jersey is self-governing in internal matters, but the UK government is responsible for defence, overseas representation and international affairs. Jersey’s government is carried out by committees and these are made up of 53 elected independent members.
