Reilly eases into 400m individual medley final
04 August 2002
Australia’s Jennifer Reilly clocked the fastest time in the women’s 400m individual medley qualifying heats with 4:44.57.
She’s now favourite to take the gold medal later in the evening on the last day of the Games.
Reilly said: “I haven’t swum sub-4:46 for a very long time, so I’m delighted with that.”
Elisabeth Van Welie of New Zealand won the first of the two heats in her personal best 4:47.82.
She said “I just used the 200m fly as a warm-up. That was tough, trying to do both events so close together, but I’m so pleased with that time.”
“We got our first medal in the pool last night, hopefully I can get a medal myself tonight,” she added.
England’s Rebecca Cooke (4:50.60) who has already won two gold medals at the Manchester Aquatics Centre, also qualified and looks ready to fight for a medal in the final.
