Thorpe clinches last gold of the Games

Ian Thorpe clinched the last gold medal at Manchester 2002 in the menís 4x100m medley final as the Aussies signed off with a new Games record.

Thorpe had the honour of clinching the last gold at Manchester 2002

It was a fitting end to the Games as the man who has dominated the pool and the headlines swam the last leg to grab his sixth gold medal and Australiaís eighty-second of the XVII Commonwealth Games.

Afterwards an emotional Thorpe said: ďItís been a fantastic Games, not only for Australia, but for all teams. Iím just pleased to have been part of it and to have had the opportunity to be part of it.Ē

The team of Matt Welsh, Jim Piper, Geoff Huegill and Thorpe led all the way and finished with a time of 3:36.05.

Englandís Adam Ruckwood, Adam Whitehead, James Hickman and Matt Kidd fought back to steal the silver ahead of Canada setting a new British record in the process (3:38.37).

Whitehead said afterwards: ďItís been the best week of my life. Swimming with these guys is great. Iíve enjoyed every minute of it.Ē
