Indian medallists seek gold

23 July 2002

India’s two star Badminton players, Aparna Popat and Pullela Gopichand, have come to Manchester looking to improve on their performances in Kuala Lumpur four years ago.

Gopichand is hoping to win a silver or gold at the Games

For Popat that means a gold medal to better the silver she won in the ladies’ singles in 1998, when she lost the final to Kelly Morgan.

“I have been training hard leading up to coming here and I want to improve on my silver medal from last time,” said Popat.

Her team-mate Gopichand, meanwhile, took bronze in Kuala Lumpur losing in the semi-final to the winner, Wong Choong Hann.

“I am hoping to win silver or gold this time, but it will be tough as the Malaysians have very strong men’s singles players,” said Gopichand.

Both players are spurred on by the incentives from the Indian Government, which offers financial rewards to medal winners.
