03 August 2002

In the welterweight division Daniel Geale of Australia took on Zulu from South Africa and came out comfortably on top 26-17 to take the gold.

Daniel Geale was impressive on the way to gold

Geale always looked in command of the fight and his higher tempo and work-rate pushed him along, rarely finding himself in trouble.

Next up was light-middleweight category final between England’s Paul Smith and Jean Pascal of Canada who went into the fight as hot favourite.

After a bad first round Smith, from Liverpool pushed Pascal all the way with the Canadian only winning through in the dying seconds to take the gold 18-16 after going into the fourth tied at 9-9

Australia’s middleweight Paul Millar was next in the ring to face local fighter Steven Birch from St Helens, England. In a scrappy affair Millar came out on top, scoring consistently to win 20-14 to take Australia’s first gold in the boxing competition.
