Golden goal gives India's ladies hockey title

03 August 2002

India won gold with a 3-2 victory over England but only after a stormy and controversial finish to the end of the women’s final.

Kharab

India celebrate the first goal against England

Mamta Kharab scored a golden goal as the hooter was sounding for the end of the first period of extra time and her team-mates jumped for joy.

But the goal was only allowed to stand after two appeals by England, the second one withdrawn, said Team England, in the spirit of the tournament tagged the Friendly Games.

The England girls graciously accepted silver nearly two hours after the end of the match, but will still feel robbed after dominating the match only to become the victims of Indian breakaways.

England missed a stack of chances in the first 20 minutes only to be punished with a goal by Mamta Kharab completely against the run of play.

Sita Gussain piled on the agony for England when she scored from one of the rare short corners the Indians had forced.

On the stroke of half-time, though, Sarah Blanks pulled a goal back for England and in the 46th minute Helen Grant deflected a shot in from Jane Smith to level the game at 2-2.

It seemed England would go on to win, but the Indians defended with great determination to take the game into extra time and the amazing scenes at the end before Mamta Kharab emerged a winner with the golden goal.
