04 August 2002

Jamaica win their first Commonwealth Games netball medal by taking bronze against England in a goal-for-goal thriller.

Jamaica, ranked number 4 in the world, were tipped pre-Games to influence the medal standings and delivered against the world number three and defending bronze medallists.

Jamaica, a team held in high regard by powerhouse nations Australia and New Zealand, led 41-40 at three quarter-time.

England took the lead with seven minutes remaining spurred on by their home crowd, a near-capacity 10,000 predominantly red and white clad spectators.

Playmaker goal attack Abby Teare has been the mainstay in goal for England but shooter Alex Astle (32/38) was the standout on Sunday making shots from long and mid range.

English captain Olivia Murphy was the backbone through the midcourt.

With just over one minute remaining – and England trailing 53-54 - a high pass into Astle overshot the mark and sealed the home side’s fate.

For Jamaica centre Nadine Bryan, wing attack Sharmalee Watkins and wing defence Sharon Wiles were the instigators through the midcourt.

When star shooter Elaine Davis (JAM) found her accuracy after quarter-time, her side gained the edge. In the first quarter Davis missed five shots (6/11) but she turned in a more characteristic performance after quarter-time.

Davis shot 14/14 in the second quarter and 10/10 in the third.

England, led by defenders Sonia Mkoloma and Amanda Newton, had led 14-13 at quarter-time before the Jamaica settled to lead 29-27 at half-time.

The final score was a very close 55-53.
