England gain momentum in rugby sevens
03 August 2002
England maintain their one hundred percent record against a determined Samoan side at the City of Manchester Stadium with a 19-7 win.
England, who got off to a slow start in the opening two matches of their group against the Cook Islands and Kenya, started to show their mettle.
The result means that both England and Samoa progress into the Cup competiton, whilst the Cook Islands and Kenya will compete in the Bowl event.
England’s Rob Thirlby said afterwards: “The pace of our game and the communication is gradually picking up and building for the next round. But Fiji or Australia will be very tough whichever we end up playing.”
Ben Gollings also commented on England’s potential quarter-final opponents: “Between Fiji and Australia? To be honest I don’t think we mind. We’ve beaten them both in the past; we’ve got the upper hand on Fiji, although they look quite good. Any of them, let’s just go out there and get another win under our belts.”
