Wallabies seal Samoan showdown

03 August 2002

Australia beat Fiji 19-12 to seal a quarterfinal showdown with Samoa.

Australia vs Fiji

Australia stop Fiji in their tracks

In the pool D match between Fiji and Australia, both sides were assured of a place in the cup competition.

What was billed as the match of the group stages, turned out to be training session affair.

Fiji, the silver medallists in Kuala Lumpur, looked disinterested for much of the match, confident that they would defeat either of the potential quarterfinal opponents put in front them.

The Australians were able to stroll into a 19-0 lead, before Fiji showed a glimmer of the pace that their sevens’ sides are renowned for, recovering 12 points in the last two and a half minutes.

Australian captain Richard Graham said afterwards: “We kept hold of the ball really well in the first half. The game plan was to try and deny them as much ball as we could. You can see the electric pace that some of them have got; they’re beautiful on their feet. But we got in their faces, put pressure on them, and turned the ball over a number of times.”

Australia, bronze medallists four years ago, showed all the signs that they will take some stopping when the cup knockout stages begin.
