04 August 2002
England will go head to head with Australia in the final of the rugby sevens plate competition.
England's rugby sevens team
England played well making the most of all their opportunities to win their semi-final round with a comfortable win over Canada of 29 – 0.
Australia battled hard to scrape a win against a strong Welsh side taking the lead with a narrow margin of 7 – 5.
Reflecting on the tournament Shane Thompson of Canada said: “We had a pretty good tournament but it’s a disappointing end. We finish in the top eight, which is a pretty good goal for Canada, considering we’re an amateur country. We do this in our spare time so we’re competing pretty well with teams that are professional. We’ll go back to work having had a great experience here.”
In the bowl competition semi finals Scotland beat the Cook Islands 26 –7 and Tonga beat Kenya 41 – 10, leaving Scotland and Tonga to face each other in the final.
