Fabian Mark Juries of South Africa said of his 19 – 12 victory, “we wanted gold, but the bronze will have to do. It’s been a great experience here.”

This was reflected by his team mate Jean De Villiers commenting on losing the semi-final against Fiji: “I’m obviously very disappointed. I really thought we had a chance, but we just threw it away. I scored an early try but we just couldn’t keep our position.”

Fa’atonu Pelasio Fili of Samoa said: “That was a tough game. We made a lot of mistakes at the start. We were hoping for the medal but South Africa were too good. The crowd was 100% behind us the whole time; it was just like playing at home. The best thing for me was beating Australia in the quarter finals, and being here, it’s just awesome.”
