EAD table tennis has made its debut at the Manchester Games

England’s Sue Gilroy turned out a terrific display to book her place in the final of the inaugural EAD Commonwealth table tennis tournament.

Gilroy won in straight sets against compatriot, and close friend, Cathy Mitton; 13-11, 11-2, 11-8.

Gilroy who has competed in the Paralympic games in Sydney, now hopes to take gold in the final on 4 August.

In the other semi-final, South African Allette Moll overcame the Australian, Joy Boyd in a gripping five game match; 14-12, 4-11, 11-8, 8-11, 11-8.

Both Mitton and Boyd will take away Bronze medals.

Gilroy said afterwards just what the victory meant to her: “It is an overwhelming feeling. I am stunned. I want this really badly – I have been looking towards the Commonwealth Games for so long. My father has been very ill and I want the gold for him. He was here today and it meant a lot.”

On playing against an England teammate, Gilroy said: “It was hard. I always find it really difficult to play against English players. We train together and she is a really good player. I find it much easier to play against foreign players but I just had to remain calm.”

Moll was thrilled with her semi-final win: “I knew it was going to be a tough game. I was hoping to win.”

There is some degree of history between Gilroy and Moll, but the South African has a firm gameplan.

Moll said: “The last time we met was three weeks ago in Holland in the World Table Tennis Team Cup. I lost 3-2.”

“I’ve got a good strategy in place. I’m going to take it shot by shot.”
