Records fall in EAD weightlifting
03 August 2002
Nigeria’s Solomon Amarakuo twice set world best marks on the way to a gold medal in the EAD weightlifting competition.
Amarakuo lifted 225kg in his first attempt for one record and advanced it to 235 with his final lift. It meant that he overtook Australia’s Richard Nicholson who was in the gold medal position at the time.
Nicholson was credited with the silver with a lift of 170kg and the bronze medal was awarded to Malaysian Kon Fatt Cheok with 150kg.
New Zealand George Taamaru tried to overtake Amarakuo’s world record with his final lift at 247.5 but failed.
All scorings were adjusted to relate body weights to the weights lifted. On points, Amarakuo totalled 150.38, Nicholson finished on 148.47 and Cheok earned 144.09.
