Cooke scorches to pool victory

02 August 2002

The women’s 800m freestyle was won in dramatic style by England’s Rebecca Cooke in the last event of the evening.

Scintillating performance from Rebecca Cooke

Cooke finished ahead of Australia’s Amanda Pascoe and Jamaica’s Janelle Atkinson to claim a brilliant win in front of a partisan home crowd in Manchester.

Cooke’s time of 8:28.54 was easily enough to fend off the rest off the field as England’s women continued with their great performance in the pool.

Cooke said afterwards:

"You do have last-minute nerves, but the race went exactly as I planned. I wanted to take it out from the start and keep building on my lead.

"The England team is on a high at the moment, we’re exceeding all expectations, and everyone is looking forward to their races."
