18July2002

Australian swimming sensation, Ian Thorpe, is not so sure he will walk away with the seven gold medals hes tipped to take.

Ian Thorpe could walk away with seven gold medals

"I feel confident with the preparation that I've had," Thorpe told a news conference on 17 July.

Im looking forward to the opportunity of being able to race again and hopefully for the most successful meet I can possibly have - which probably won't be seven gold medals."

The 19-year-old, who won four gold medals at the last Commonwealth Games, is in contention to win seven gold medals, including one in the 100m backstroke event which he took up just for fun.

Australia are expected to take the majority of golds in the swimming events which will take place in the Manchester Aquatics Centre, the only swimming venue in the UK with two 50-metre pools as well as separate diving and leisure pools.
