The men and women’s 1m springboard preliminaries have been completed with Australia qualifying in first spot in the women’s with Irina Lashko pushing Canadians Blythe Hartley and Emilie Heymans into second and third respectively ahead of this afternoon’s semi-finals.

In the men’s competition Alexandre Despatie qualified comfortably with Englishmen Tony Ally, Mark Shipman and Pete Waterfield finishing behind him.

Australian Rebecca Gilmore, who opened the competition, and therefore was the first person to compete at the 2002 Manchester Commonwealth Games said:

“It was nerve wracking to be the first athlete to compete at the Commonwealth Games. I only had two minutes after the walk-on to get on the diving board. But it’s only the prelims, and I knew I would go through.”
