Despatie on course for second gold

26 July 2002

Canada’s Alexandre Despatie moved another step closer to his dream of winning three gold medals at Manchester 2002 with an impressive display in the three-metre springboard preliminaries today.

Despatie goes into Friday's final with a commanding lead

Despatie, who won gold in Thursday’s one-metre springboard, will now enter this evening’s finals with a lead of 7.08 pts. He leads Matthew Helm of Australia, who is in second and his fellow Canadian Jeff Liberty is in third place.

Following his silver medal in the one-metre springboard, England’s Tony Ally goes into the final in fourth position, with less than eight points separating him from the silver medal position.

Friday evening’s final is set to be keenly contested with less than 15 points separating the remaining seven divers from the medal places. There is no difficulty limit for dives in the final so it promises to be a high scoring and spectacular event.
