Women's 50m butterfly begins

30 July 2002

No upsets in the women's 50m butterfly preliminaries.

Scotland's Alison Sheppard qualified in the 50m butterfly as she won heat 3

Petria Thomas led the qualifiers for tonight’s semi-finals of the 50m butterfly with a time of 27.07 with Nicole Irving (AUS) next up on 27.22 and Alison Sheppard (SCO) on 27.39.

Thomas, who had earlier qualified in the 200m freestyle, said: “That felt a lot better. I think I was a bit eager to get into the water for my first swim. But that was comfortable.”

Sarah Ryan, also of Australia and third in heat three, said: “I felt fine. It was good to get a swim in the pool so early, and see where to walk, where to go and where to warm-up. The pool is fantastic. The atmosphere is great, and the crowd is really loud.”

Nicole Irving, who won heat two said: “That felt great. It was easy. When I walked out on to the deck, my heart felt like it was going to come out of my chest. But as soon as I got on to the blocks, I felt calm and relaxed.”
