The Thorpedo topped the times on 3:47.24 with Hackett (3:49.13) ahead of Graeme Smith of Scotland (3:50.19) and Adam Faulkner of England (3:52.39).
Winner of the third heat Thorpe said: “I was really happy with that. All I wanted to do was keep it even all the way through the race and hopefully that’s a good indicator for tonight.”
19-year-old Welshman David Davies, fourth in Thorpe’s heat, said: “It is my first Games. I wasn’t too nervous. I had a good night’s sleep. I wasn’t too fazed about swimming with Thorpe."
"I noticed the cheer for him at the start. Hopefully, I can beat him in the future. My goal is to make a final here and just swim fast,” he added.
England's Salter, who came second in heat two behind Grant Hackett, said: “It was an alright swim, not great. But it was good for a morning heat. The pool is swimming fast.”
