30 July 2002

The quality of the men's 50m backstroke competition was never in doubt as the Games record was shattered twice within two heats.

Welsh smiles as he claims a new Commonwealth record

The first heat of the semi-finals saw Canadian Riley Janes come home comfortably. He splashed his way to first place in a time of 25.96 seconds to claim the Commonwealth record.

South Africa's Gerhard Zandberg came second in 26.05 seconds. Martin Harris of England completed the top three in a time of 26.49 seconds.

The second heat was won by Matt Welsh in 25.86 seconds. The Australian star stole the Commonwealth record that Janes had gained in the previous heat.
