Knabe won heat three with a time of 1:01.79 and Whitehead ensured his place in the semi-finals with the second fastest time of the race and the session, 1:02.03.

Kula Lumpur bronze medallist Darren Mew came through in fourth in the second heat and took the eleventh qualifying spot.

England’s other medal hopeful James Gibson took the seventh spot qualifying finishing third in his heat with 1:02.93. Afterwards he said: “It was a nice morning’s swim. I wanted to get the first swim out of the way, and that’s a good start.”

Australia’s Justin Norris, who took the 200m butterfly gold medal on Tuesday night, qualified for the semi-final as twelfth fastest and he seemed to be enjoying Manchester 2002: “I didn’t get the best amount of sleep last night. Saying that, I’m still pretty excited – it’s all fun from now on, the pressure’s off.”
