Thomas flies ahead to set new record at pool


Australiaís Petria Thomas proved a class above the rest of the field and she stormed to gold in the womenís 50m butterfly final at the Manchester Aquatics Centre.

The result was never in doubt from the second Thomas broke the water and she powered home setting a new Games record of 26.66 in the process.

The Aussies made it a one-two with Nicole Irving touching home in second with a time of 27.13.

Scotlandís Alison Sheppard completed the top three in 27.30 with Englandís Rosalind Brett finishing just behind her.

Afterwards, Thomas said: ďIím really happy with that performance. Commonwealth gold and a personal best at the same time, itís not bad work.Ē
