The women's 4x200m freestyle final saw a surprise win for England as Australia were finally outgunned at the tail end of the race.

Pickering - pleased with gold

The England squad of Karen Legg, Georgie Lee, Jo Fargus, and Karen Pickering pulled out all the stops in the women's 4x200m freestyle final this evening in front of a crowd that urged them to victory in a manner reminiscent of England's track relay wins at the City of Manchester Stadium on Wednesday.

The English squad took gold in a new Commonwealth record time of 8:01.39.

Australia took second place (8:01.91) and Canada third (8:04.66).

England's first three swimmers stayed with the Australians over the first 600 metres setting up a final 200m clash between England's Pickering and Australia's Petria Thomas.

Pickering kicked with 75 metres to go and edged into a slight lead before the final turn as Thomas seemed unaware of the English girl's move.

Pickering maintained her lead as first Thomas tired. Thomas also tired over the last 25 metres but did enough to keep England ahead to record a rousing win at the pool.
