Kenya announces strong athletics team

A star studded team of 24 runners has been announced by Kenya.

The marathon team named by the Athletics Association of Kenya has been reshuffled in a surprise turn of events, and Erick Wainaina and Joshua Chelanga are now the only two to travel. The original line up included Wainaina, Boston champion, Rodgers Rop and world silver medalist Simon Biwott. The only women’s representative will be Esther Maina.

Commonwealth champion Japheth Kimutai who finished last in the 800metres is another surprise selection, he is teaming up in the event with Joseph Mutua the former world junior champion.

David Okeyo, the association's secretary, said residential camp training will start at the Moi International Sports Centre (MISC) Kasarani.

The full team are:


20km - David Kimutai
5,000m - Benjamin Limo, Willy Kirui, Sammy Kipketer;
10,000m -Paul Kosgei, John Korir, Wilberforce Talel;
3,000m SC - Stephen Cherono, Ezekiel Kemboi, Abraham Cherono
1,500m - William Chirchir, David Kiplak;
10,000m - Dan Muchoki
Marathon - Erick Wainaina, Joshua Chelanga


800m - - Faith Macharia, Salina Kosgei, Joseph Mutua, Japheth Kimutai
1,500m - Jackline Maranga , Naomi Mugo
5,000m - Edith Masai, Iness Chenonge
10,000m - Susan Chepkemei; Officials - Francis Nyatome (Manager), Alice Adala (chaperon), Rose Tata Muya (Coaches).
