It's the high jump for Hestrie

09 July 2002

South African high jumper Hestrie Cloete looks set to retain her 1998 Comonwealth title after hitting top form in recent meetings.

World champion Cloete, a 23-year old from Coligny, has consistently improved at each of the European meetings this year achieving a two metre jump at the Zagreb 2002 IAAF Grand Prix II.

Other members of the South African Commonwealth Games team have also returned convincing performances in recent meetings particulary in the throwing events.

These include Veronica Abrahamse, winner of a bronze medal in the shot put at the 1998 Commonwealth Games, who started her overseas campaign well with a distance of 16.92m. With team mate, Drienkie van Wyk, out injured Abrahamse is now one of the favourites to take gold at the Games.

However, Elizna Naude, the South African discus record holder, had to be satisfied with coming third against two of her Commonwealth Games opponents at the meeting in Varazdin, Croatia. Shelley Newman of Britain won the contest with a throw of 58.10m with Naude in third place with a throw of 56.51m.
