Malaysian medal hope in race to recover

10 July 2002

There is optimism that walker, Yuan Yufang, will be amongst the Malaysian Games contingent.

Salford Quays

Walks will take place at Salford Quays

Malaysian director of the National Sports Institute, Dr Ramlan Abdul Aziz visited Yufang, one of 13 Malaysian athletes who have contracted dengue fever, in the Pantai Medical Centre, where she has been recovering, and said: “I expect Yufang to be discharged by tomorrow. Yufang is making steady progress and the blood test indicated that she is now on an upward trend … this is a good sign. Her blood platelets have gone up to 1,000 by today. But she is being kept (in hospital) one day more for observation.”

“She should resume light training by the weekend. Whether she can increase the physical level of training will depend on further check-ups.” said Ramlan.

After being disqualified for floating at the 1998 Commonwealth Games in Kuala Lumpur the news from Raman will give Yufang, who is a medal hope for Malaysia in the 20km walk event, a huge boost.

Ramlan finally added: “She is a very remarkable athlete and I believe her strong determination and commitment will help pull her through this one.”
