High expectations of Nigerian track and field athletes

11 July 2002

Nigeria is basing its main Manchester 2002 Commonwealth Games hopes on the athletics relays and field events.

A spokesman for the Athletics Federation of Nigeria said the nation's 4x100m women's relay team could win a medal “if we practise our baton exchange very well.”

Hopes are also high that shot put throwers like Chima Ugwu and Vivian Chukwuemeka-Peters will be winning medals for the country at the games if they can re-enact their pre-competition form.

The 42 athletes and officials representing Nigeria at Manchester 2002 have embarked on a training tour of Germany where they will spend two weeks before going moving on to Manchester.

Nigeria has entered competitors in seven sports at the games: athletics, judo, wrestling, swimming, boxing, table tennis and badminton.
