Freeman finds new confidence and feels fit

18 July 2002

Cathy Freeman guarantees that she will run faster than her current fitness should allow when she comes to Manchester.

Cathy Freeman will be running in the 4x400m

The Australian 400m champion told a Melbourne newspaper: "I can guarantee I'll run faster than my fitness should allow," said Freeman.

"I feel fit. I'm not as fit obviously as I would like to be," Freeman told reporters.

"It should be enough to get me around two laps for a relay. I think the competitive juices will kick in."

After being out of competition since the 2000 Olympics, Freeman has had concerns about her fitness.

"But I've had a few workouts that have given me new found confidence," she said.

Freeman, who had originally withdrawn from the Games so she could look after her husband, Sandy Bodecker, will run in the 4x400m relay.
