Chambers on track for gold

24 July 2002

Top sprinter Dwain Chambers arrived in Manchester on 23 July for a Commonwealth Games showdown and declared: "I fear no-one."

Favourite for the 100m gold, he's focused on victory and says a world record is possible on the fast track at the City of Manchester Stadium.

Ranked as Europe's number one, Chambers, 24, is looking for his first senior title in the showpiece final on Saturday, 27 July after finishing a disappointing fourth at the Sydney Olympics and fifth in last year's World Championships.

His confidence has been boosted by two wins in 48 hours this season over Olympic champion Maurice Greene.

"Since then I just don't fear anybody - why would I? I've had elements of doubt every time I've raced him, but since then all those fears have been erased.

"I've had two surprising wins over Maurice, ones I never expected, and that's just taken the athletics world by storm - and also me. I thought it would happen at some point in the year, but not so soon. My confidence has been elevated."

Asked if he could break a world record this weekend, he replied: "Anything is possible - that track has a lot of potential. It's a shame it's going to be torn up after the Games."

Welsh sprinter Christian Malcolm is a close pal. He thinks Chambers is ready to seize gold in Manchester.

"I know what he's been through the last couple of years and I know it burnt him in the Olympics and the World Championships.

"I know he's a far better athlete, one that should have got medals."

"Now I feel this is the time and the place for Dwain Chambers."
