Daniel Caines runs to success in Heat 5 of the 400m

The menís 400m event began at the City of Manchester Stadium this afternoon.

Heat 1 of the men's 400m first round saw success for Avard Moncur of the Bahamas. He finished first with a time of 45.72 seconds. Marcus la Grange was right on his heels to gain second place with a time of 45.95 seconds.

Heat 2 saw victory for Alleyne Francique of Grenada. He commented,"I expect to win a medal. Iím in good shape and have been here a month to prepare. I wanted to win the heat because I didnít know what to expect in the next round." He was followed by Jared Deacon.

Michael Blackwood came first in Heat 3 of the event. The Jamaican athlete suggested, "My aim was to go through these rounds as smart as possible and conserve my effort until later. Iím going to be ready, but I know Iíll have to go faster." Blackwood was followed by Sri Lanka's Sugath Thilakaratne.

Chris Brown was victorious in Heat 4. This athlete, from the Bahamas, completed the race in 46.39 seconds. Pete Coley followed close and won second place with a time of 46.45 seconds.

England's Daniel Caines came first in Heat 5 of the competition with Canada's Shane Niemi in second.

Heat 6 showed the talents of Jamaica's Sanjay Ayre who finished first. Botswana's Johnson Kubisa taking second place.

The final heat saw Eric Milazar of Mauritius finishing in first place with a time of 47.31 seconds. Sri Lanka's Rohan Kumara came second in 47.70 seconds.

The second round of the men's 400m takes place tonight at the City Stadium.
