Athletics preview - 27 July

The men's 100 metres is wide open and up for grabs.

Dwain Chambers

Dwain Chambers is determined to display 100 metres mastery

A feast of top quality sprinting is on the menu for the second day of the Games track field programme.

The first two rounds of the 100m saw the main contenders sparring with each other, while at the same time producing highly respectable good times.

Now the pressure is on as they approach the semi-finals and final knowing that even a slight dip in form could mean the end of their medal hopes.

On the fastest track in the country, England hopes, Dwain Chambers (10.17) and 19-year-old Mark Lewis-Francis (10.13), showed their paces, with team-mate Jason Gardener also going through, but showing less convincing form.

The biggest danger could come from Kim Collins (SKN), who was coasting from 60m onwards while at the same time keeping Lewis-Francis well within his sights in their second round race.

Deji Aliu (NGR) and Uchenna Emedolu (NGR) also posted respectable times to set up the possibility, given favourable conditions, of the 10sec mark being threatened.

Lewis-Francis and Collins face each other again in the semi-finals, while Chambers and Aliu go in the other race.

With Denise Lewis (ENG) missing, the womenís heptathlon is up for grabs. The second day of this competition promises more keen competition for the medals, with Jane Jamieson (AUS) determined to go one better than the silver medal position she took behind Lewis in Kuala Lumpur four years ago.

The absence of the injured Dean Macey (ENG) has also left a gap, and a golden opportunity, for someone, in the decathlon which gets under way in the morning, with the 100m.

The programme also includes the start of both the menís and womenís 800m.
