Lee McConnell

McConnell ran a tactical race

Richards (51.91), gold medallist in the 4x400m at the 2001 World Championship stamped her authority over Catherine Murphy (52.15) of Wales in the first heat. Cameroonís Mireille Nguimgo qualified in third.

Murphy, who has recently been plagued by illness said: ďThings are getting back together. Iíve been injured as well. Itís been a race against time, but I think I might have won.Ē

In the second heat, Allison Beckford (52.14), narrowly overcame South Africaís Heide Seyerling (52.36), with Canadian Ladonna Antoine-Watkins (52.37) in third.

In the third heat, Christine Amertil (52.13) of the Bahamas time was 2 seconds outside her personal best, suggesting the 22-year-old still has plenty more to offer.

Englandís Lee McConnell (52.15) was an impressive second, with Allian Pompey (52.61) of Guyana also qualifying.

McConnell said: ďMy aim was to finish in the top two, and I wanted to make sure I didnít get a bad lane in the next round. Iím pleased that I ran the race tactically.Ē

Helen Karagounis (52.69), Clementine Bewouda (52.41), and Helen Frost (52.67) each qualified in fourth place from their respective heats.

Frostís time was her best this season.
