Medal treble for Kenya
27 July 2002
Kenya collect a hat-trick of medals by claiming 1st, 2nd and 3rd in the men’s 3000m steeplechase.
Stephen Cherono (8:19.41), Ezekiel Kemboi (8:19.78) and Abraham Cherono (8:19.85) won gold, silver and bronze in a closely run race.
An elated Cherono said: “I feel happy. I was just jogging. I am going to try to finish the year as the world number one. That’s my aim. The Olympics are my main goal. Everything is focused on Athens.”
Ezekiel Kemboi said of the race: “It was such an easy race. We took it easy. We were working together to take gold, silver and bronze.”
England’s Stuart Stokes, who came fourth, was delighted with his performance despite not winning a medal.
“Unfortunately I missed out on a medal, but I knocked seven seconds off my personal best, so I got it right on the day. Personally I can’t ask for any more than that.” He said.
