Although the athletes failed to reach the instant qualifying standard of 4.10m, the standard of competition was still high.

Heat A of the qualifier saw success for England's Irie Hill and Aussies Tatiana Grigorieva, and Bridgid Isworth. Northern Ireland's Zoe Brown gained a national record by reaching 4.00m also. She joined the other three at the top four of their group.

Welsh athlete Rhian Clarke joined England's Lucy Webber at a height of 3.90m.

Heat B of the qualifying round saw success for Canadians Stephanie McCann and Diana Ellis. They were joined by Australia's Kym Howe and Melina Hamilton, at a height of 4.00m.

Anna Fitidou of Cyprus and England's Tracey Bloomfield qualified at a height of 3.90m.

The women's pole vault final will be held tomorrow evening at the City of Manchester Stadium.
