28 July 2002

At the beginning of the race all eyes were on the much fancied African distance runners but McCann and co had other ideas.

A powerful run saw her always in control as she cruised to victory nearly five minutes ahead of compatriot and silver medallist Krishna Stanton.

Jackie Gallacher raced into to make it an Australia one-two-three ahead of England's Debbie Robinson who arrived to rapturous applause.

The crowds had been out to line the route since 8.00am and by the time the women entered the City of Manchester Stadium for the final lap, as usual it was packed and the atmosphere was electric.

McCann said after the race: “This is actually the first marathon I’ve won so it feels fantastic. It felt really good out there to be in front and winning.

“When I came into the stadium I saw it was a one, two, three on the scoreboard. The other two have been training for years so it was great that we managed to achieve that."

Krishna Stanton said: “We’re all really good friends. There’s a real camaraderie, not only in the marathon team but in the whole Australian team. I think it’s rubbing off on everyone. It’s fantastic.”

Kerryn McCann (AUS) - 2:30.05
Krishna Stanton (AUS) - 2:34.53
