Spectators were treated to a show of excellence from Nigerian star Vivian Chukwuemeka who won the tournament with a distance of 17.53m.

The athlete succeeded in thrashing the 17.00m distance with almost every shot. She commented: "It's a surprise. I did not expect to throw so far."

"When I was practicing last week I didn't think I'd make it. But I'd just like to say I'm really happy. It means a big deal to me."

Valerie Adams of New Zealand put up a good fight for second place. She finished with a distance of 17.45m.

She commented: "I'm happy with my performance and that's the main thing. I'll be back, never fear. I'm not disappointed about anything. I had a fantastic time out there. I didn't throw as far as I wanted, but it was a great atmosphere."

South African Veronica Abrahamse claimed third place, and a bronze medal, with a result of 16.77m.
