400m gold for Jamaican Blackwood

28 July 2002

But England's Daniel Caines misses out on the medals.

Michael Blackwood

Blacwood charges towards Commonwealth gold

Spectators at the City of Manchester Stadium were treated to the tighest finish to the men's 400m final imaginable.

An entralled audience watched as Jamaican Michael Blackwood crossed the finish line in a time of 45.07 seconds to claim gold and lift the Commonwealth title.

Second place was awarded to Canadian Shane Niemi who completed the track in 45.09 seconds.

He said: "Caines is fast and I had him outside so I knew I had to chase. I was in the mix at 300 - I was still out there."

"I'm happy with silver. The first two rounds I had a bit of food poisoning, and then yesterday I felt great, so I knew I could be up there with those guys. It's the biggest meet I've ran in and done well."

Avard Moncur, of the Bahamas, claimed the bronze award with a time of 45.12 seconds.

He said: "The position is pretty good. I've been through a lot of obstacles this year so it feels good that I can come here and compete. I feel pretty good but I guess the other guys were stronger. They all went out there and gave a good race."

Gold medallist Blackwood said: "I'm very happy right now. I just did it one step at a time, and the final has gone my way. To make a strong finish was my game plan. The aim for my career is to be the number one athlete in the world at 400 metres."

The close proximity of the race added tension and excitement to the competition but resulted in devastation for England's Daniel Caines. He crossed the line in 45.13 seconds, narrowly missing a place on the medal podium.

"I didn't want to come back empty-handed and I gave it my best shot. I couldn't see where the others were, so I was running blind to a certain extent. I will learn from it and come back - hopefully stronger," he concluded.
