Chris Rawlinson celebrates his gold in the 400m hurdles

Rawlinson, who reached the semi finals of the 400m hurdles at the 2000 Olympics, ran a time of 49.14 with Welsh hurdler Matthew Elias not far behind him on 49.28.

He said: “Having seen some English favourites not succeed in the last few days, I was a little bit scared that that might happen to me. Hopefully today I have put a few critics right. I have not won in a great time, but the amount of pressure you face as a favourite, I never want to be a favourite again.”

Elias said of his performance: “I went off really well, probably a bit too well, because I messed my stride pattern up on the third hurdle, which I’ve never done before in training or racing. But I got over that. I knew I was running well… very relaxed… so I made sure I maintained my own race. I was lucky I got to chase Chris today. He was the hare, I guess.”

Jamaica's Ian Weakley claimed the third spot with 49.69.

Overall result was:

Chris Rawlinson (ENG) 49.14
Matthew Elias (WAL) 49.28
Ian Weakley (JAM) 49.69
Anthony Borsumato (ENG) 49.72
Dinsdale Morgan (JAM) 50.14
Willie Smith (NAM) 50.14
Ashoka Jayasundra (SRI) 50.63
Matt Douglas (ENG) 51.01
