It's all about Eve in the javelin

Laverne Eve of the Bahamas throws a seasonal best to win gold in the women's javelin.

Kelly Morgan

Kelly Morgan gets bronze in the javelin

Eve, who's last throw reached 58.46, achieved a seasonal best with a gold medal into the bargain.

Elated, she said: "It feels good, really good. My training has been going well, I have been really launching them. At one stage I got a bit anxious out there. I had to calm myself down and try to build my rhythm.

Eve has represented Bahamas in the javelin at the 1988, 1996 and 2000 Olympic Games. She is the national record holder with a throw of 63.73m set in 2000.

Silver medallist, Cecilia McIntosh of Australia said: To come to my first Commonwealth Games and win silver is awesome.

England's Kelly Morgan, who has had problems with her shoulder, managed 57.09 with her first throw but she couldn't better this therefore had to settle for bronze.

On failing to live up to her billing as the favourite she said: I had a chest infection last week and an injection in my shoulder, but thats no excuse. I warmed up well and I was really up for it. I felt settled, but the more I tried the worse it was. Its so frustrating.

So its back to the drawing board. Ill have to sit down with my sports psychologist and work out how to tackle championships where things are like they are here.

The overall result was:

Laverne Eve (BAH) 58.46
Cecilia McIntosh (AUS) 57.42
Kelly Morgan (ENG) 57.09
Sorochukwu Ihuefo (NGR) 52.24
Jeska Kabasindi (UGA) 51.33 (PB)
Goldie Sayers (ENG) 51.32
Karen Martin (ENG) 50.28
Bernadette Ravina (MRI) 49.58
