30 July 2002

Australia’s Nathan Deakes takes gold at Salford Quays in a new Games record time of 3:52:40.

Conditions were overcast but very humid as 25-year old Nathan Deakes got into his 50km stride at the stunning Salford Quays walk course outside Manchester city centre.

For the first 25km he was happy to keep pace with New Zealand’s Craig Barrett as the pair broke away early on. But Deakes was keen to press on and by the 30km mark had built a lead of some 15 seconds.

Deakes was never troubled from that point on by his rivals and continued to extend his advantage in the latter part of the race.

He crossed the finish line in a time of 3:52:40, over four minutes ahead of silver medal winner Barrett (3:56:42).

Canada’s Tim Berrett took third place with a time of 4:04:25.
