Cloette takes high jump gold

30 July 2002

South Africa’s Hestrie Cloete set a new Games high jump record and retained her Commonwealth title.

Cloete took gold with a new Games record

The Olympic silver medallist was a cut above the rest as she cleared 1.96m to take the title, but said afterwards: “I would have liked two metres.”

Manchester’s Susan Jones took the silver medal with a leap of 1.90m at the third attempt.

She was pleased to finally get a senior championship medal to add to her 1994 world schools medal: “I’ve got to be pleased with silver because it’s my first medal at any type of championships” she said.

Canada’s Nicole Forrester had to settle for the bronze medal with a jump of 1.87m, but she only just took it over Bobby Aloysius after the Indian cleared the same height.

Forrester took the medal because she did 1.87m in one attempt compared to Aloysius’ three.

Afterwards she said: “It’s not what I was looking for but it’s not too disappointing. So I guess I’m satisfied.”
