Distress for Diane as she misses out on medals

31 July 2002

The women's 100m hurdles final proved disappointing for England's Diane Allahgreen earlier this evening at the City Stadium.

Diane misses out on medal success

England's hopeful Diane Allahgreen failed to achieve a medal after finishing in fourth place tonight in the women's 100m hurdles final. The athlete was forced to watch in horror as her Commonwealth dreams ran away from her, in the form of Jamaica's entrants.

Jamaica's Lacena Golding-Clark finished in first place in a time of 12.77 seconds. The gold medallist commented:

"I never thought I could have won but I came here with high hopes. I'm so happy. It's my first major gold. In 1998 I was fourth in the long jump. I only switched to hurdling this year."

Vonette Dixon of Jamaica claimed second place and the silver medal. She also achieved her personal best time. Dixon was satisfied with her award:

"I enjoyed that. I was trying to get a season's best. I was looking to do better but that was good. When I started the race I was looking up at the Jamaican flag and I thought to myself I'm going for that."

She discussed why team-mate Bridgette Foster did not race: "Her hamstring's bothering her a little bit so to play it safe she didn't run."

Nigeria's Angela Atede claimed the bronze medal after pipping Allahgreen at the post to claim her season's best time of 12.98 seconds:

"I'm so happy because I didn't have a good start and I was in the outside lane. After the race I didn't realise I'd won until I looked up at the result. I'm so happy."

Allahgreen said later: "I'm a bit disappointed. Normally I get a good start. But this time I was having to play catch up with the Jamaicans."

Allahgreen completed the track in 13.01 seconds.
