Holmes celebrates Commonwealth glory

Holmes won the title in a time of 4:05.99. After a race that was hotly contested for most of its distance the new champion was unable to contain her emotions.

The silver medal was awarded to Hayley Tullett of Wales. She ran a time of 4:07.52 and also achieved her season's best record.

England's Helen Pattinson came in a close third in 4:07.62.

Kenya's Jackline Maranga, Jamaica's Madrea Hyman and Kenya's Naomi Mugo all claimed season's bests.

Kelly McNeice of Northern Ireland scooped a personal best time of 4:16.46.

Afterwards Holmes said: Im not afraid to say I was crying my eyes out. There have been so many ups and downs in my career that last week I was so scared to train in case I was injured again. I cant believe it. I could not have asked for any more.

Wales Tullett commented: You have to be in the right place at the right time and I wasnt in the right place for most of that race. I was just running as fast as I could over the last 200. Im so pleased. I just had to believe in myself.
